Amgen Inc., the world’s largest biotechnology company, said second-quarter earnings climbed 40% on increased sales of the company’s two mainstay drugs.

Profit increased to $100.2 million, or 70 cents a share, from $71.64 million, or 49 cents, a year earlier. Revenue jumped 31% to $343.1 million from $261.3 million.

This year’s results include a pretax gain of $13.9 million from a previously announced legal settlement. Without the gain, earnings would have been $91.6 million, or 64 cents a share.
