Santa Clarita / Antelope Valley : Blaze Damages 40-Acre Forest Service Plantation

LAKE HUGHES — A fire burned about 50 acres of Angeles National Forest, destroying much of a 40-acre U.S. Forest Service plantation.
The blaze, about one mile southwest of the rural community of Lake Hughes near the intersection of Pine Canyon and Lake Hughes roads, was reported just after 10 p.m. Wednesday, according to a Forest Service spokesman. It was contained about 7 a.m. Thursday.
Fighting the fire was difficult because of the terrain and the heavy brush, said Robert Brady. There has not been a fire in that particular area for about 35 years, according to records.
At the peak of the effort there were nearly 400 people battling the blaze, including members of the Forest Service and Los Angeles County Fire Department.
Brady said the plantation, which is about 25 to 30 years old, contained ponderosa pine and other trees that were planted from seedlings as part of a reforestation project.
No structures were lost and there were no injuries reported, he said.
The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
