SOUTHLAND : Kaiser Workers Vote to Approve Contract

Nearly 12,000 health-care employees voted overwhelmingly Friday to approve a new contract with Kaiser Permanente of Southern California, ending a 3 1/2-month deadlock during which the union members worked without a contract, according to a spokeswoman for the hospital chain.
The vote, which began Wednesday in Los Angeles, Orange and Ventura counties, was tabulated Friday. The a new contract was put into effect immediately, said Kaiser spokeswoman Kathleen Barco. The contract calls for a 3% wage increase during the initial year and lump sum cash payments each of the next two years.
