Furtado Wins Race at Mammoth

Juli Furtado won her 16th consecutive mountain biking race Friday in the Grundig World Cup tour stop at Mammoth Lakes.

Furtado took the pro/elite women’s cross-country title in a time of 2 hours 4 minutes 13 seconds--2:47 faster than second-place finisher Susan DeMattei over the 25.6-mile course. Jill Smith placed third, 4:49 behind the winner.

In the men’s cross-country competition, David Wiens won the closest World Cup race of the year, beating Tim Gould by four seconds. Wiens won with a time of 2:48:28 over a 38.4-mile course. John Tomac finished third, 2:10 behind Wiens.

Both races took place on Mammoth Mountain’s 12.8-mile course, which climbs to an elevation of 9,900 feet. The women raced two laps, the men three.
