OLYMPIC FESTIVAL VALLEY-AREA ROUNDUP : Fercho and Winthrow Thwarted

SAN ANTONIO — Danny Fercho and Kevin Winthrow each scored four goals for the West, but a goal by Brian Parath with 10 seconds to play gave the South a 17-16 victory in team handball Friday at the Convention Center.
Fercho, a 23-year-old winger from Camarillo, gave the West a 1-0 lead 2 minutes 35 seconds into the game. He scored later to tie the match, 3-3, and his third goal of the first half stopped a streak of three consecutive South goals, pulling the West within 6-4.
Winthrow, 29, of Thousand Oaks, scored his first goal of the game to make the score 6-5. The Moorpark College graduate scored three goals in the second half as the West rallied from a 15-12 deficit.
Kurt Stone, 33, of Camarillo also scored for the West.
CYCLING
Northridge’s Pam Schuster, 32, teamed with Janie Eickhoff, Susan George and Jessica Grieco for a third-place finish in the women’s cycling team trial.
The North quartet finished the 54-kilometer course in 1 hour 22 minutes 12.70 seconds.
In the men’s race, an 81-kilometer team time trial, Shawn Cronkhite, 22, of Quartz Hill and David Clinger, 15, of Woodland Hills teamed with John Frey and Jeff Holwerda for a seventh-place finish. The West “C” foursome rolled past the line in 2:09:24.90. East “E” clinched the championship with a time of 1:47:04.00.
