Nike Kicking Off Used-Shoe Program

BEAVERTON, Ore. — Nike Inc. will kick off its recycling program for used shoes this week with two Reuse-A-Shoe pilot programs in Florida and Washington state, the company said.
Nike said it is teaming up with a Foot Locker store in Fort Myers, Fla., and the waste management company Gulf Disposal to offer consumers an opportunity to trade in their Nike shoes during a back-to-school promotion.
In Seattle, the company will join the Foot Zone store in an ongoing program to collect a total of 5,000 pairs of used Nike shoes.
About 18 months ago, the athletic footwear and apparel maker announced it would use recycled materials to make new footwear.
The company plans to grind the shoes up into two basic raw materials--granulated rubber from midsoles and outsoles and granulated fabric fluff from uppers.
