COUNTYWIDE : Trash Hauler Wins Recycling Award

A recycling program for six cities in the county has won an award from a national organization of trash collection companies.
Taormina Industries, which hauls trash in Brea, Anaheim, Placentia, Villa Park, Yorba Linda and Garden Grove, has won the award from the Solid Waste Assn. of North America. It will be presented at the association’s exposition in San Jose this month.
Each year, the organization honors individuals, cities, groups and corporations across the nation for their recycling efforts.
The recycling program involves collecting trash and recyclable materials in separate containers using an automated collection vehicle. A robotic arm picks up the containers from the curbside and empties the materials into the vehicle.
The materials are then transported to a plant where they are sorted and processed. The program was started in Anaheim in 1989.
“The key to the program is participation by the residents,” said Vincent C. Taormina, the company’s chief executive officer.
