NATIONAL LEAGUE ROUNDUP : Clark and Manwaring Lift Giants Over Reds

Kirt Manwaring hit a two-run home run and Will Clark had a two-run triple during a four-run sixth inning as the San Francisco Giants rallied to beat the Cincinnati Reds, 10-7, at San Francisco on Monday.

Clark had three hits and three runs batted in. Manwaring had two hits and drove in three runs.

The Giants overcame two homers by Hal Morris and one by Kevin Mitchell.

Dave Burba (10-2) earned his eighth consecutive victory. Rod Beck, the fifth Giant pitcher, worked the ninth for his 34th save.

San Francisco trailed by 7-4 when Willie McGee singled to start the sixth. Manwaring followed with his fourth homer to chase rookie John Roper.

Reliever Johnny Ruffin (1-1) struck out two but then gave up an infield single to Dave Martinez and hit Robby Thompson with a pitch. Clark tripled off the center-field wall to score both runners and put the Giants ahead, 8-7.

The Giants added two runs in the seventh on run-scoring doubles by Manwaring and Mike Benjamin.

Morris and Mitchell hit consecutive homers in the first inning against rookie Greg Brummett.

Morris had three hits and a sacrifice fly. He drove in four runs.

St. Louis 7, Pittsburgh 3--Rookie Allen Watson (5-0) gave up three hits in seven innings to lead the Cardinals at Pittsburgh.

Tom Pagnozzi and Bernard Gilkey homered, Todd Zeile had a tie-breaking two-run single during the fifth and Luis Alicea added a two-run double as the Cardinals moved to within six games of idle Philadelphia in the NL East.

Watson won his fourth consecutive start, giving up one hit in his final six innings.

Houston 5, San Diego 4--Eric Anthony, who hit a two-run homer in the first inning, scored on Luis Gonzalez’s squeeze bunt in the 10th inning for the Astros at San Diego.

Florida 3, Chicago 2--Walt Weiss’ run-scoring single at Miami broke a seventh-inning tie to lift the Marlins.
