A Thousand Oaks man has been arrested on suspicion of taking part in an assault on two men that authorities are investigating as a hate crime, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department reported.
Marko Casanova, 18, of Thousand Oaks was arrested Friday night in Simi Valley by sheriff’s detectives. Authorities said three Latino males armed with a golf club and a knife attacked two black men at an apartment complex in Thousand Oaks on Wednesday.
Two assailants fled the scene, but sheriff’s deputies arrested one 15-year-old boy on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and violation of the men’s civil rights, the Sheriff’s Department reported. The boy is being held at Juvenile Hall awaiting arraignment. A third suspect, a 21-year-old Thousand Oaks resident, is still being sought, Sgt. Steven Bourke said.
Victims Wilburn Barnett, 38, of Anaheim and Derek Andrews, 20, of Thousand Oaks, did not require treatment.
