Fielder made 11 of 12 field-goal attempts last season and also was named the top punter in the Southern Section.

OUTLOOK

The Falcons lost just enough players that a return to the semifinals is probably a bit out of reach, but they still appear to be one of the best teams in the league. LaCom is the team’s best two-way threat. He rushed for 843 yards and is the top returning inside linebacker. One of Crescenta Valley’s problems in 1992 was an inability to throw the ball, but Eberhart said Fielder progressed well in that area over the summer. Fielder’s primary target will likely be Taras, whom Eberhart said is a college prospect. The line will be young, with only Kline and French returning. Muir is the team to beat, but Crescenta Valley should finish second.

Glendale

OUTLOOK

After back-to-back 10-victory seasons, Glendale had its 1992 campaign ruined by a four-game losing streak. Most of the skill positions are filled by returning players. Jose completed 80 of 160 passes for 994 yards. Register and Carr, a Division I prospect, will do most of the running. Including the tight end, four players return on the offensive line, which Shoemaker still calls his team’s biggest weakness. If they beat Crescenta Valley, the Dynamiters could finish the season in second place.

The Tornadoes have not won more than two games in a season since 1987, when they were 4-7.

OUTLOOK

Hughes has made the playoffs only once at Hoover, and this team is probably not good enough to make it two trips for the coach. The Tornadoes will again run a wide-open passing offense, but instead of Nate Dishington at quarterback, Alan Lau will be throwing the passes. Lau is a transfer who played for the junior varsity at Burbank last season. Hughes said Hoover will be deeper on the line of scrimmage this season. A holdover problem from last year will be lack of a running game, though. “If I had a big running back, I’d run the ball more,” Hughes said.
