A Hot Tip

This is just a personal comment about the Aug. 15 letter regarding the automatic 15% tip at the Danish Inn in Solvang. I tip, but only if the service merits it, which of course, is most of the time. However, I don’t believe in tipping as a percentage of the bill. Many restaurants and servers, too, feel that a tip is an entitlement; that it is deserved merely for taking the order and bringing the food. That might be worth 10%, if it is done promptly and with grace. But follow-up service and a continuing concerned attitude are also important. If I truly felt the service was worth only 10%, as the letter writer did, I would have changed the amount on the sales check.
