Clinton Asks Arab Leaders’ Support

MIAMI BEACH — President Clinton is asking Arab leaders to “actively and openly” support the Palestine Liberation Organization’s agreement with Israel for Palestinian self-rule in the Gaza Strip and Jericho, an Administration official said Sunday.
In letters sent Friday, Clinton gave his personal commitment to the breakthrough agreement, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. The President said he hopes the accord can be a catalyst for comprehensive agreements by Syria, Jordan and Lebanon with Israel by the end of the year.
The letters went to leaders of Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Kuwait, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, Morocco and Yemen.
Their existence was disclosed during a trip to the Miami area by Clinton to meet with political supporters and make a Labor Day inspection of rebuilding efforts after Hurricane Andrew.
