Lockheed to Close Norton AFB Venture: The company said it will shutter its commercial aircraft refurbishing operation at the Air Force base in San Bernardino because of a lack of work. Lockheed, which mainly fixed Boeing 747 jetliners at Norton, all but shut down the 2-year-old plant in June when it laid off 400 of its 450 workers there. The defense contractor had invested $30 million in the venture--part of a bid to expand its commercial efforts--but it was hurt by the aircraft industry’s slump. Lockheed, which disclosed the move in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, said the future of the facility is undecided.
