Marion Merrell Dow Inc. Acquires Generic Drug Company: St. Louis-based MMD said it wrapped up the $275-million acquisition of Rugby-Darby Group Cos., the nation’s largest generic drug company, in an effort to obtain a bigger share of the managed care market. Plans to acquire Rugby-Darby were announced in May at MMD’s annual meeting. The generic business will be known as the Rugby Group Inc. and will conduct business as Rugby Laboratories. It will be based in Atlanta, operating as a wholly owned subsidiary. The acquisition does not include the veterinary, medical, dental or consumer marketing groups of privately held Rugby-Darby, which is based in Rockville Centre, N.Y.
