CAMP PENDLETON — One man was killed and five were injured when a Marine helicopter crashed into the ocean in the latest in a string of fatal military helicopter accidents, officials said Friday.
The Huey UH-1N helicopter, which was airlifting a sailor from the Peleliu for medical treatment, went down late Thursday eight miles west of Camp Pendleton, just after taking off from the deck of the ship, Marine officials said.
The helicopter was carrying four Marines and two Navy sailors, but officials refused to say which branch of the service the dead man belonged to. His identity was also being withheld until his family was notified.
Marine officials said none of the five survivors suffered major injuries. They were pulled from the water by rescue craft from the Peleliu. The cause of the accident was being investigated.
Since mid-August, eight Super Cobra and Huey military helicopters have crashed in different parts of the country, claiming at least 13 lives.
