1991 Lockwood Vineyards Merlot ($11) --This is one of the most attractive Merlots I’ve tried in years, but until recently it was sold only on a mailing list, so I never wrote about it. In the last two weeks, though, Lockwood signed a deal with a local wholesaler to sell its wine in Southern California, and it should soon be available at finer wine shops (though it is still in extremely limited release). The wine has ample fruit, toasty oak notes and a complex herbal finish. Buy it if you can find it.
