Woodbridge Strikes Early, Upsets Sea Kings

IRVINE — Woodbridge scored two touchdowns in the first six minutes of play and upset Corona del Mar, 28-9 in a Sea View League game Friday night at Irvine High.
The Warriors (5-2, 2-2 in league) were led by running back Billy Atkinson, who rushed for 114 yards and one touchdown in 12 carries.
J.R. Walz led Corona del Mar (4-3, 2-2), ranked 10th in Orange County, with 128 yards in 24 carries.
Woodbridge took a 7-0 lead on Atkinson’s 90-yard touchdown run on the Warriors’ first play from scrimmage.
On Woodbridge’s next possession, quarterback Matt Sauk connected with Gary Young on an 87-yard touchdown pass to give the Warriors a 14-0 lead with 6 minutes 45 seconds left in the first quarter.
Woodbridge took a 21-0 lead when Sauk scored on a 32-yard quarterback keeper with 43 seconds left in the first quarter.
Corona del Mar closed the gap to 21-6 when quarterback Aaron Perimutter connected with Billy Taketa on a nine-yard touchdown pass with 29 seconds left in the half.
Corona del Mar trimmed the lead to 21-9 on a 24-yard field goal by Mike Zoelle with 8:29 left in the third quarter.
