Bishop Amat Defeats Loyola Again, 10-3

La Puente Bishop Amat High, The Times’ top-ranked team, continued its winning steak against rival Loyola, defeating the Cubs, 10-3, in a Del Rey League game Friday night before 10,000 at Bishop Amat.

Lancer wide receiver Daylon McCutcheon caught a 36-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter and intercepted two passes to key Bishop Amat’s ninth consecutive victory over the sixth-ranked Cubs.

“I’m just disappointed because we lose to them every time,” Loyola Coach Steve Grady said.

Bishop Amat (9-0) has not lost to Loyola (7-2) since 1977. Bishop Amat defeated the Cubs twice last season, the second time in the Southern Section Division I championship game.

“I know if I got beat twice in one season I’d want the other team bad,” said McCutcheon, son of former Ram running back Lawrence McCutcheon. McCutcheon intercepted a tipped pass--his second interception of the game--at the Bishop Amat 20-yard line with less than two minutes remaining to clinch the victory.

“That’s what I am, I guess, a big-play maker,” he said.

Loyola’s only points came on Mark McDonald’s 53-yard field goal in the second quarter.
