Troy Goes for Touchdown, Gets It to Beat Fullerton

FULLERTON — Troy’s gamble on fourth down paid off in the Warriors’ 21-17 victory against Fullerton in front of 300 at Fullerton.
On fourth down from the one-yard line, with just less than eight minutes left in the fourth quarter and the Warriors trailing by three, Troy (6-2-1, 3-1) elected to go for the touchdown instead of the tying field goal. Larry Vasquez ran in to give Troy the lead.
“We had to go for the points,” Troy Coach John Turek said. “We didn’t want to go for the tie.”
The Indians (3-6, 0-4) came back on their next possession. They drove 50 yards to the Warrior 15-yard line. The drive was cut short when Chris Young’s pass was intercepted by Nick Ruzzi with just less than five minutes to play.
Troy kept the ball from the Indians behind the strong running of Larry Montgomery and Matt Frobenius. Montgomery finished the game with 111 yards on 19 carries, while Frobenius had 103 on 12 attempts.
“It was a big win for us,” Turek said. “We’ve been competitive for so long, it’s good to have an opportunity to play for the league championships.”
Keith Ginter had 11 catches for 175 yards for the Indians. He also had a touchdown, a field goal and a blocked punt.
