OUTLOOK
Last season’s league champions return seven lettermen from a 25-3 squad that exited in the third round of the Southern Section Division III-AA playoffs. Returning starters include all-league selections Sweet, who shot 51% from three-point range and averaged 10 points, and Renken, who averaged 10 points and 14 rebounds her sophomore season. Raya also returns juniors deBruijn and Korsmeier, all-league honorable mentions who each averaged seven points. Along with Hinkle and Gibney, the Golden Hawks add freshmen Bryant, who should see a lot of playing time, and Jamie Nebeker, who is fighting for the starting point guard spot. Gibney, a junior, was MVP of last year’s junior varsity squad. Raya says depth and the ability to wear down opponents by rotating in at least 10 players are keys to the Golden Hawks’ success. The Golden Hawks face a tough road trying to defend their league title. Raya agrees Cypress is the league favorite, followed by El Dorado, Esperanza and Katella, and believes his squad should reach its third straight postseason berth.
