Statehood Rejected

* I am pleased that the House rejected statehood for the District of Columbia (Nov. 22) because I think there are already too many states. It would make more sense to me if the fiction that this country is composed of a union of sovereign states was abolished and the entire nation declared one entity, divided for the purpose of local administration into departments all governed by the same set of laws and regulations. Such a proposal, if carried out in good faith, might unify the country rather than contribute to fragmentation because everyone would be treated the same.
The state legislatures would be abolished and the U.S. Senate eliminated because there would be no further need for the Great Compromise. The country could have a unicameral legislature consisting of congressmen, but as the administrative departments would not have to be as numerous as the recent number of states there would be no need for a large Congress.
My suggestion is not meant to be taken seriously because significant change to the basic structure of government is an idea whose time has not come, but is it fun to dream.
