OUTLOOK
With three starters and five experienced players returning from the league’s No. 3 playoff team, Mater Dei was expected to be strong. But when the Monarchs added Peterson, a transfer from Monrovia who was a first-team All-Southern Section Division III selection as a freshman, and Meyers, a transfer from Pittsburgh whose team won the Pennsylvania state title last year, other coaches started ducking for cover. “Mater Dei is loaded,” Capistrano Valley Coach Pete Belanto said. Hauser, who as Mary Gainey led the Monarchs to four Angelus League titles in the 1980s, takes over after two years as JV coach and promises a more gritty style of play. Oseguera, a first-team all-league selection, led the county in rebounding with 16.4 per game. She averaged 16 points. Botana, a second-team pick, is a good outside shooter and honorable-mention selection Luckey is an able point guard. Peterson averaged 19.5 points for Monrovia. “We’re not very big, but we’re very, very athletic,” said Hauser, whose sister, Geri Gainey, is her chief assistant.
