Protesters Target London’s Harrods: About 60 demonstrators protesting against the destruction of hardwood trees in Brazil raced through Harrods luxury department store in London Friday, grabbing mahogany wood products such as candlesticks and coat hangers. A group called the Citizens’ Recovery of Indigenous People’s Stolen Property organized the raid to coincide with a demonstration outside the store by environmental groups Friends of the Earth and Greenpeace. Greenpeace spokeswoman Catherine Barr said 40% of the mahogany logged in Brazil ended up in Britain, 40% in the United States and 20% elsewhere in Europe. About 80% of it was taken illegally from protected areas, she said.
