Elvire Popesco; French Actress for Half a Century

Elvire Popesco, 98, a Romanian-born actress who delighted the French public with her aristocratic looks in dozens of light comedies and films for over half a century. She had a meteoric career as an actress and theater director in Bucharest before moving to France at age 27. Some of France’s top playwrights, including Jean Cocteau, Maurice Druon and Andre Roussin, wrote parts tailored for her. She starred in more than 50 films, directed the Theatre de Paris and Theatre Marigny and acted until she was 85. In Paris on Saturday.
