Employment Office

* I am curious to know why your reporters consistently refer to the Employment Development Department as “the unemployment office.” I find no rationale for it except that among the functions of the office is processing applications for unemployment insurance benefits. The primary purpose is, as its official name notes, development of employment opportunities. A person does not have to be unemployed to be served there.
Television reporters use the same designation. This conveys a negative image to the public and anyone who wants to use the services of that department.
