The Santa Monica-based J. Paul Getty Trust has given a $75,000 boost to a project in Indiana aimed at preserving African-American cultural landmarks.
The Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana won a grant to identify areas of historic importance to blacks in the state. The grant is part of the fund’s drive to expand cultural diversity in arts and humanities, said program officer Timothy Whalen.
The grant will be used to identify black settlements, stops on the “Underground Railroad” and other cultural and historic landmarks in danger of disappearing due to highway and urban renewal projects, said Claudia Polley, chairwoman of the Indiana foundation’s African-American Landmarks Committee.
“Historically, black places of importance have been the first to disappear in urban areas . . . and their rural counterparts are often simply forgotten,” Polley said.
