Estancia Upsets Vaqueros

COSTA MESA — Reserve Cyndi Richards made six of seven shots to help Estancia to a 51-44 victory over third-seeded Rancho Alamitos in a Southern Section Division III-A girls’ basketball quarterfinal Wednesday at Estancia.
“We asked her to come in and play defense and rebound and she did both besides scoring,” said Rich Boyce, Estancia’s acting coach.
Estancia will paly San Luis Obispo, which upset second-seeded Ojai Nordhoff, in a semifinal Saturday at a site to be determined by Estancia.
Richards scored consecutive baskets late in he first quarter, giving the Eagles an 8-5 lead. They never trailed after that.
Rancho Alamitos (20-7) tied the score, 14-14, with 5:11 left in the second quarter before Estancia pulled away. Jessica Waltz’s steal and layup with one second left gave Estancia a 24-18 halftime lead.
Estancia’s Laura Czingula had 17 points and 10 rebounds.
