Coach: Don Turnbull (first year).
1992-93: Empire League runner-up.
Key returners: Jeremy Becker, Sr., LJ, TJ; Greg Cleave, Jr., 100, 200; Jimmy Hutsell, Sr., 200, 400; Jason Sandoval, Jr., 800, 1600, 3200.
Key newcomers: Wes Bunn Jr., Fr., LJ; Adolfo Cruz, Fr., 1,600-3,200.
Outlook: “This will be my biggest challenge ever,” Turnbull said after taking over a Centurion program that has edged closer to Esperanza in the Empire League race. Turnbull will look to sprinters Hutsell and Cleave to handle track duties. Hutsell, one of the West Coast’s fastest 400-meter runners, won the Empire League quarter mile (49.29) and was fourth (49.06) in the Southern Section Division II finals. Cleave finished as the league champion at 200 meters (22.22) and was second at 100 meters. Becker is an all-around jumper (45-11 in the triple jump and 21-4 1/2 in the long jump) who might dabble in the high hurdles. Cruz, a miler in the low 4:30s as an eighth grader, will split time with the Cypress baseball team, and Bunn has enough athletic talent to start on the varsity basketball team as a freshman.
