Council to Finance Bridge Replacement

Citing safety concerns, the Moorpark City Council has agreed to spend about $2.5 million to replace an elevated portion of Spring Road that runs across the Arroyo Simi.
Council members voted 4 to 0 Wednesday to move ahead with design of a bridge to replace the existing two-lane structure built nearly 50 years ago. Councilman Pat Hunter was absent.
Another option was merely renovating the bridge, but officials decided that with $506,000 in federal funds available and another $567,000 toward the project already in a city account, replacement made more sense.
“We need to make a substantial investment in it anyway,” Mayor Paul Lawrason said. “So I think it’s just time to go ahead and do it.”
The new bridge will initially be two lanes with a bicycle and pedestrian pathway but will be expandable to four lanes of traffic, council members decided.
The source of the additional $1.5 million needed to replace the bridge has yet to be determined, officials said.
