OAXACA, Mexico — Seven people were killed and at least one was injured in an ambush in southern Mexico, officials said.
The dead and injured were among 20 men, women and children traveling by truck Friday on a highway near the rural community of San Nicolas Yaxe, the government of Oaxaca state said.
The truck was intercepted by 15 gunmen who forced some occupants to get out and then fired on the people still inside with high-powered weapons, the state-owned news agency Notimex reported.
San Nicolas Yaxe and nearby San Baltazar Chichicapam have been involved in a longstanding conflict over land. In 1986, the conflict led to several clashes between peasants from the two communities.
