HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS : Mater Dei

Schea Cotton scored 36 points to lead Santa Ana Mater Dei to an 84-68 victory over Fresno Bullard Thursday night at Ocean View High in the Division I semifinals of the CIF Southern Regional tournament.

Cotton, a 6-foot-5 freshman, made 13 of 19 shots, including six dunks for the Monarchs (33-0). He had 18 in the first half, which ended in a 33-33 tie.

Mater Dei scored 51 points in the second half and put the game away with a 15-4 run to start the fourth quarter. Cotton scored eight of those points.

Shannon Taylor scored 15 points for Bullard (25-4).

Crenshaw 66, Long Beach Poly 59--The Cougars used a pressure defense to defeat Poly in a Division I semifinal at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Crenshaw will play Mater Dei Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Anaheim Arena in the Southern Regional final.

The Cougars (27-2) forced 16 turnovers in the first half, including 10 in the first quarter.

Reggie McFerren, a 6-foot-6 guard, scored 10 of his 18 points in the first quarter as the Cougars took an 18-8 lead and were never threatened. Tremaine Fowlkes scored 25 points to lead Crenshaw. Damion Dawson led Poly (26-6) with 18 points.

Bakersfield East 70, Riverside North 61--UCLA-bound J.R. Henderson scored 28 points to lead Bakersfield East (27-4) in a Division II victory over North (29-2) at Bakersfield East.

Garden Grove Pacifica 65, San Diego St. Augustine 62--Pacifica rallied from a 20-point second-half deficit and guard Ryan Teague scored four points in the final 40 seconds to break a 61-61 tie before 3,000 in a Division III game at Cypress College.

Chris Vlasic had 27 points, including five three-pointers, for Pacifica (29-1). Jelani McCoy had 19 points, 18 rebounds and five blocked shots for St. Augustine (25-6).

Verbum Dei 103, Santa Fe Springs St. Paul 76--Jamaal Cobbs scored 24 points and Andre Miller added 19 points and six steals to lead Verbum Dei (26-2) to a Division IV victory over St. Paul (17-13) at Compton College.

GIRLS

Irvine Woodbridge 84, San Bernardino 63--Guard Jamie Oenning scored 21 points to lead Woodbridge (31-0) past San Bernardino (26-7) in a Division II game at Woodbridge.

Newport Harbor 63, Santee Santana 51--Gina Heads scored 16 points and Genevieve Evarts had 14 to lead Newport Harbor (24-7) over Santana (26-4) in a Division III game at Santana.

Santa Ynez 65, Cerritos Valley Christian 60--Kristi Rohr scored 25 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead Santa Ynez (26-5) to a Division IV victory at Valley Christian (27-3).

El Cajon Christian 74, San Luis Obispo Mission Prep 39--Jenny Wenning scored 22 points to lead El Cajon Christian (27-4) to a Division V victory over Mission Prep (19-7) at Christian High.
