SCHOOL: Sylmar
SPORT: Baseball
YEAR: Senior
SEASON AT A GLANCE: Diaz, who batted .316 with eight doubles as a junior, is batting .589 with four doubles in his first 17 at-bats.
WEEK AT A GLANCE: Sylmar started the season with losses to Saugus and Alemany in the Westside tournament. Last week, Diaz helped the Spartans rebound with victories over Santa Monica, Crossroads and Harvard-Westlake. The senior first baseman went nine for 12, including five extra-base hits. He drove in eight runs, scored six and stole four bases. Against Santa Monica, Diaz’s two-run triple--his third hit of the game--broke a 4-4 tie in the eighth inning. Four days later, he went four for four with three doubles and three runs batted in. “Every ball he hit last week was hard,” Sylmar Coach Gary Donatella said. “He’s starting to get into a routine.”
