Unbeaten Romero Set to Fight for Flyweight Title at Olympic

Unbeaten flyweight Danny Romero of Albuquerque, N.M., will fight Brian Lonon of Las Vegas for the North American Boxing Federation title in a 12-round bout tonight at the Grand Olympic Auditorium.

Romero (15-0 with 13 knockouts) is ranked eighth by the International Boxing Federation and 10th by the World Boxing Council. Lonon is 18-1 with 10 knockouts.

There are four other bouts on the card, which begins at 5:30 and will be broadcast live by ESPN.

Unbeaten John Tapia (23-0-1, 14 KOs) of Albuquerque will meet Antonio Ruiz (15-4-3, six KOs) of Mexicali, Mexico, in a 10-round flyweight bout. Tapia has won two fights this year after a 2 1/2-year layoff because of cocaine abuse. Tapia had his boxing license revoked by the New Mexico State Athletic Commission in October of 1991 after a third positive test for cocaine.

Kirk Johnson (7-0) of Kitchener, Canada, will fight Ross Puritty of El Paso (8-7) in a six-round heavyweight fight, Marty Ulloa (9-0) of Phoenix will fight Victor Miranda (3-7-1) in a six-round featherweight bout and Roberto Garcia (11-0) of Oxnard will fight Vicente Gonzalez of Los Angeles (14-19-2) in a six-round junior lightweight fight.
