DUTCH MODERNE: Graphic Art From De Stijl to Deco by Steven Heller & Louise Fili (Chronicle Books: $16.95; 132 pp., paperback original). Heller’s attractive survey of graphic design between the wars continues with this examination of Dutch logos, posters, advertisements and magazine covers. The tension between the adherents of the more eclectic, decorative Wendigen style and the more formal De Stijl (the style) produced a strikingly diverse body of work. Although equally elegant, many of these designs appear less angular than their American or French counterparts.
