The leadership of Temple Emanuel, whose membership voted down a proposed merger with Wilshire Boulevard Temple last year, has named Laura Geller to be senior rabbi of the Beverly Hills temple.
The appointment was said to mark the first time a woman has become head of a major urban Jewish congregation.
Geller, currently executive director of the American Jewish Congress, is the third woman ever ordained as a rabbi by the Reform movement, one of three major branches of Judaism.
