SOUTHERN SECTION TENNIS PLAYOFFS : Doubles Are Difference in Mission Viejo Victory

Josh Fair and Kuong Tran swept at No. 2 doubles to help Mission Viejo defeat Villa Park, 12 2/3-8 1/3, in a first-round Division I boys’ tennis match Wednesday at Mission Viejo.
Fair and Tran, who won their sets, 6-0, 6-2, 6-2, and Fernando Machuca and Christian Fernandez at No. 3 doubles, pulled out the victory after the Diablos lost more than half of their singles sets and their No. 1 doubles team lost its first set.
Mission Viejo (10-8) advances to the second round, where it will play fourth-seeded Corona del Mar today. Villa Park finished the season 13-6.
In other Division I first-round matches:
Corona del Mar 19, Lakewood 2--The No. 2 doubles team of Jed Weinstein and Tyler Stonebreaker swept its sets, 6-0, 6-1, 6-0, for Corona del Mar (19-2).
Dana Hills 15 1/3, Canyon 5 2/3--Erik Lundblad won at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-1, 2-6, for Dana Hills (20-0), which will meet Woodbridge in the next round.
Foothill 14 2/3, El Toro 6 1/3--No. 3 singles player Roger Chang overcame a bout with the flu and posted a 6-1, 6-2, 6-0 sweep for Foothill (20-1). Teammate Jack Huang also swept at No. 1 singles for the Knights, which faces University today in the second round.
In a Division II first-round boys’ tennis match:
Trabuco Hills 13 1/3, Fullerton 7 2/3--Joey Trainer won in No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-3, 6-2, for Trabuco Hills. Trabuco Hills (14-6) will play Los Alamitos in the second round today. Fullerton finishes 12-10.
In a Division III first-round boys’ tennis match:
Corona Centennial 18 2/3, Valencia 2 1/3--Lawrence Lu won the only set in singles play for Valencia (13-8).
