Today’s pairings (at UCLA): Division 4-A--Woodland Hills El Camino vs. San Pedro, 5 p.m.: Division 3-A--Tujunga Verdugo Hills vs. Sepulveda Monroe, 3 p.m.
Last year’s champions: Division 4-A--San Pedro; 3-A--Verdugo Hills.
Outlook: Top-seeded San Pedro (20-4) is playing for a third consecutive 4-A title, having defeated Wilmington Banning in the title game last year, 7-0. San Pedro is led by pitcher Petrina Martinez, who threw a three-hit, 2-0 shutout against Chatsworth in the semifinals last week. Martinez and shortstop Victoria Brucker were the 1993 4-A co-players of the year. El Camino Real (19-4) also has strong pitching. Jennifer Gould recorded 12 strikeouts and allowed only four hits in a 7-0 semifinal victory over Sylmar. In 3-A, Verdugo Hills (18-3) didn’t lose much after last year’s starter, Rachel Maldonado, left the team early in the season. Verdugo Hills’ new starting pitcher, Schannon Schoonover, is 15-0 since replacing Maldonado. First baseman Maryanne May is Verdugo Hills’ most productive offensive player. She led the Northern League in home runs with nine. Monroe (16-2) committed six errors in its semifinal game against Westchester but still won, 12-2, after receiving multiple hits from five players.
