El Camino Real High won the City Section 4-A Division championship softball game Tuesday, upsetting top-seeded San Pedro, 4-0, at UCLA’s Sunset Field.
San Pedro (20-5) was attempting to win a third consecutive championship, and was confident pitcher Petrina Martinez, the 4-A co-player of the year, could get it for them.
But in the battle of two of the city’s best pitchers, El Camino’s Jennifer Gould struck out five and allowed the Pirates only three hits in the complete-game shutout.
Gould pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the fourth inning with no outs.
“You have to give her all the credit,” San Pedro Coach Tony Dobra said. “We had the bases loaded and she just shut us down. She was very tough when she had to be.”
Martinez gave up two earned runs and allowed five hits for San Pedro.
“In these games, the team that makes the least mental mistakes is the one that wins.” El Camino Coach Neils Ludlow said.
Monroe 7, Verdugo Hills 3: The Vikings (17-2) scored four runs in the second inning to easily defeat the Dons (18-4) in the 3-A final.
After loading the bases in the second, pitcher Melissa Ennis hit back to the pitcher, but Schannon Schoonover was unable to field the ball cleanly and then threw the ball past the catcher allowing two runs to score.
