Clerk at Fair Held on Suspicion of Theft

A clerk at the Ventura County Fairgrounds was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of stealing $12,000 from the fair’s off-track betting facility, Ventura police said.

The employee’s name was not available Wednesday night, police said, but Ventura County Fair officials confirmed that the employee was a parimutuel clerk who accepted wagers from patrons at the fair’s Watch and Wager center.

The clerk was detained at about 5:45 p.m. by fairground security officials after they discovered that the clerk’s till was $12,000 short, authorities said.

“They discovered it during the normal checks and balances,” said Teri Raley, spokeswoman for the fair. “They know exactly to the penny how much should be in those tills.”

Raley said the suspect was not employed by the Ventura County Fair, but by Southern California Off-Track Wagering Inc., a Los Alamitos-based organization that provides parimutuel services to off-track locations.
