Kristin Dunn of Cal State Northridge threw a personal best of 174 feet 9 inches to win the women’s javelin in a track and field meet at Long Beach State on Wednesday.
The throw qualified Dunn for the NCAA championships at Boise State on June 1-4.
Dunn, a left-handed junior, has been hampered by a knee injury all season, but she uncorked a throw of 169-11 in the first round to smash her previous best (164-0) and followed her 174-9.
The NCAA qualifying standard is 169-9.
“This is just a tremendous performance for her,” Northridge Coach Don Strametz said.
In other events, Northridge junior Mike McClintock threw a personal best of 221-3 in the men’s javelin and senior Rich Gitahi ran a personal best of 3 minutes 51.38 seconds in the 1,500 meters.
