James Harvey, veteran track coach at Valley College, is expected to be hired as a coach at Antelope Valley College, pending board approval later this month.
Harvey, co-coach at Valley for the past three seasons and head coach from 1985-91, will be reunited with Coach Mark Covert at Antelope Valley.
Covert was the head coach at Valley from 1976-84, during which time Harvey was an assistant.
“This is a real good move for me,” Harvey said. “I’m happy with it. Hopefully, I can have decent success here my first year and then build from there.”
Harvey, a 1972 graduate of Long Beach Poly High, is regarded as one of the state’s top junior college sprint, hurdle and jump coaches.
Marcus Reed of UCLA, Kyle Beck of USC, Russell Hester of Cal State Bakersfield and Melanie Clarke of Nevada Las Vegas are some of the athletes Harvey coached in recent years at Valley.
