Library Renovation Project Is Under Way

Renovation work is under way at the historic Memorial Branch of the Los Angeles Public Library at 4625 W. Olympic Blvd.
The building, first opened in 1930 but closed in 1990 after it failed to meet earthquake safety standards, will be reinforced to comply with seismic codes.
The renovation project will also include the building of a small addition, installation of air conditioning and carpeting, electrical improvements and an effort to make the library more accessible to disabled patrons.
The $1.8-million project is funded by Proposition 1, the 1989 library bond issue, and the city’s Capital Improvement Program.
The temporary branch at 4801 Wilshire Blvd. will remain open until the original branch is reopened in early 1996, library spokesman Peter Persic said.
