Courtney Love made a surprise appearance at the end of a Lemonheads concert recently in New York, playing two of her songs in her first performance since the April suicide of husband Kurt Cobain and the recent death of her bandmate Kristen Pfaff. Love did a solo version of “Doll Parts” and, with head ‘Head Evan Dando sitting in on drums, “Miss World,” changing the last line to “I am the one who’s asking, ‘Why do you have to die?’ ” . . .

With more than 40 tracks recorded, Eazy-E is planning to release two CDs simultaneously in September, titled “Str.8 Off the Streetz of (Expletive)Compton Vol. 1” and “Vol. 2.” And there are almost as many guest producers and performers as songs, including Guns N’ Roses’ Slash, Naughty by Nature and Eazy’s former N.W.A. mate Yella. Another N.W.A. veteran, Dr. Dre, is represented as producer of an old track Eazy pulled from the vaults for these collections. . . .

Now being handled by U2’s management team, Polly Jean Harvey is going to be working with the Irish band’s frequent co-producer, Flood, on her next album. They’ll go into the studio in September, with plans for a February release. . . .

The Cult has finished its first album in three years, titled simply “The Cult” and due Sept. 13. Group mainstays, singer Ian Astbury and guitarist Billy Duffy, were joined by bassist Craig Adams (formerly of the Mission U.K.) and drummer Scott Garrett. Bob Rock produced. . . .

The Stone Roses’ long-awaited second album--five years after its debut and three since the Manchester band was freed by a U.K. court from its Silvertone contract and allowed to sign with Geffen--is in the final mixing stages, with an early ’95 release planned. . . .

Nanci Griffith’s album “Flyer,” due in September, features guest appearances by R.E.M.’s Peter Buck (who also produced one song), U2’s Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr., Counting Crows’ Adam Duritz, the Indigo Girls, the Chieftains and Mark Knopfler.*
