Angel Foiled on 18th Hole of Quarterfinal

Darren Angel of Northridge advanced to the quarterfinal round of match play at the U.S. Junior Amateur golf championship Friday before falling on the final hole at Echo Lake Country Club in Westfield, N.J.
Angel, a 17-year-old senior at Granada Hills High, was defeated on the 18th hole of his match, 1 up, by Terry Noe of Fullerton.
In a morning match, Angel defeated Marion Moore of Orangeburg, S.C.
Also in the morning round, Andrew Barnes of Stockton defeated Brandon DiTullio of Thousand Oaks, 3 and 2.
Barnes won in the afternoon, defeating Boyd Summerhays of Farmington, Utah, on the second extra hole.
Five of the eight players who advanced to the quarterfinals are from California.

Heidi Voorhees of Valley Village, an amateur, made the 36-hole cut at the LPGA Ping-Welch’s Championship, played at the Blue Hill Country Club in Canton, Mass.
Voorhees, who graduated from USC last spring, is one-under-par. Juli Inkster is alone in first at seven-under 137.
Surfing
Joey Jenkins, a 26-year-old surfer from North Hollywood who is ranked 13th in the world, advanced into the third round of the Op Pro Surf Championship in Huntington Beach.
After seven rounds of competition, Jenkins is one of 32 surfers remaining from the field of 218 who entered the 13th Op Pro. He will surf today at 10:20 a.m.
Tim Curran, a 16-year-old amateur from Oxnard, advanced from the trials into the second round of the Op Pro. He lost to former world champion Kelly Slater and to amateur champion Kalani Robb. In the Op Junior, Curran will compete in the quarterfinals, which begin today at 4:30 p.m.
Baseball
Three Little League teams from District 40 (the Valley) have advanced to divisional all-star tournaments.
The San Val 14-15-year-old Senior all-star team advanced to the Division III tournament, which starts at 1 p.m. today in Riverside. San Val captured the championship of Section 2 Thursday with a 4-1 victory over South El Monte. Jay Heredia pitched a complete game.
San Val’s 13-year-old all-stars, 6-3 winners over Crescenta Valley in the District 40 championship game, advanced to the Division III tournament in La Mirada, which starts today at 1 p.m.
The Northridge Little League major all-stars (11-12-year olds) advanced to the Division II tournament, which opens Sunday in Rialto. Northridge, captured the Section 2 championship with a 9-1 rout of District 16’s Crescenta Valley.
Nathaniel Dunlap hit a three-run home run for Northridge and pitcher Peter Tuber worked five shutout innings for the victory.
In Little League 9-10-year-old all-star play, Woodland Hills fell to District 16 champion Crescenta Valley, 6-5, in the Section 2 championship game Friday.
