CHATSWORTH : Car Show to Raise Funds for CSUN

More than 300 souped-up and antique cars, specialty airplanes and hot air balloons will be on show Aug. 14 to raise money for books and other items for the Cal State Northridge library.

“It seems there are never enough materials to fill the needs the students have,” said Susan Curzon, dean of the university library. “The state has not been exactly flush with money.”

The Tarzana Encino Rotary Club, which is organizing the event, hopes to raise several hundred thousand dollars to start an Oviatt Library endowment fund. Other fund-raisers will be planned later, Curzon said.

The library has been closed since the Jan. 17 earthquake, but CSUN administrators hope to open the central part by Aug. 29. Repairs have been funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Funds from the show will also be given to the Rancho San Antonio home for boys, which is hosting the event.

TV personalities Jay Leno, host of “The Tonight Show,” and Tim Allen of “Home Improvement” have been invited to bring their antique cars, but neither has confirmed his attendance, Giardina said.
