REDONDO BEACH : Funds Will Help Repair Quake-Damaged Lot

The city will receive $3.5 million in federal funds to repair earthquake damage to a King Harbor parking lot, officials said.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency agreed to pay for all the repairs to the lot, which suffered extensive damage when the soil underneath was saturated with water during the Jan. 17 Northridge earthquake.
The city plans to reconstruct a 500-foot section of a seawall and rock mound that moved 17 feet horizontally as a result of the earthquake. In addition, utility lines and a nearby sidewalk require repairs, said City Engineer Desi Alvarez.
The city also is negotiating with federal officials for $3 million in emergency funds to reconstruct the Seaside Lagoon, a popular salt-water swimming spot damaged in the earthquake.
Earlier this year, the city made $60,000 in temporary repairs to the lagoon, which is near the harbor. The lagoon has been open to swimmers since June.
