STANTON : City OKs 9.8% Hike in Trash Pickup Fees

Residents will pay $1.10 more a month for trash pickup to help offset extra costs to the city’s trash-hauling company due to the Santiago Canyon landfill closure in Irvine this year.

The City Council unanimously approved the rate increase at Tuesday’s council meeting, boosting the monthly rate to $12.95 from $11.85--a 9.8% increase that will take effect Thursday.

CR&R; Inc, the trash-collection company based in Stanton, had asked the City Council in June to approve the increase to help compensate for the extra miles haulers must drive to Brea, where some of the city’s garbage is now dumped.

In addition, the city’s new cleanup program--where residents are allowed to place unlimited amounts of large items for curbside pickup four times a year--is extra work for the company and another reason behind the hike in fares.

This is the first rate increase approved by the City Council since the company and the city signed a three-year solid waste collection contract in 1991.
