Free vaccinations for children ages 2 and under will be given from noon to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at First African Methodist Episcopal Church, 2270 S. Harvard Blvd.
The daylong immunization program is part of the “Give Your Child a Shot at Life” campaign. The nationwide effort by the National Congress of Black Churches’ Community Renewal Initiative aims to protect black children from illnesses once thought to be eradicated, including polio, tetanus, whooping cough and measles.
Such diseases have re-emerged in recent years and are disproportionately affecting black children, said Martin Luther King-Drew Medical Center President Reed V. Tuckson. In Los Angeles, immunization rates for children under 2 are 44%, and 35% for black children, he said.
The National Congress of Black Churches, which represents 65,000 congregations and more than 19 million members, is setting up community vaccination programs with the aid of a grant from the Centers for Disease Control. The West Coast region received $24,000.
