World IN BRIEF : TAIWAN : Official U.S. Visit Spurs China Protest

A U.S. official has visited the president of Taiwan in his office for the first time since 1979, prompting an angry protest by China. Lynn Pascoe, head of the American Institute in Taiwan, visited President Lee Teng-hui, said institute spokeswoman Jennifer Galt. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Shen Guofang said in Beijing that Washington’s action “seriously violates the principles” of U.S.-Chinese relations.
