REGIONAL ROUNDUP : UNLV Receiver Breaks Records

Nevada Las Vegas receiver Randy Gatewood, a senior from Wichita Falls, Tex., set two NCAA records with 23 receptions for 363 yards in the Rebels’ 48-38 loss to Idaho Saturday night in a nonconference game at Las Vegas.

The previous mark for receptions in a game was 22 by Jay Miller of Brigham Young against New Mexico in 1973.

The previous mark for receiving yardage in a game was 349 by Chuck Hughes of Texas El Paso against North Texas in 1965. As a pro with the Detroit Lions, Hughes died of a heart attack during a game against the Chicago Bears in 1971.

Mike Maxwell of Nevada passed for 430 yards but Boise State used a trick play and a turnover in running off to big early lead and the Broncos (3-0) held on to beat the Wolf Pack (2-1) of the Big West, 37-27, at Boise, Ida. . . . Micah Knorr kicked a 45-yard field goal and Pratt Lyons added a safety to give Utah State a 5-0 nonconference victory over Ohio University at Athens, Ohio. The Aggies (1-2) allowed the Bobcats (0-2) to cross midfield only twice, and never inside the 35. . . . Zoe Freeman ran for 121 yards and a touchdown and also had a 36-yard pass reception to lead Arkansas State of the Big West to a 41-14 nonconference victory over Southern Illinois at Jonesboro, Ark.

WESTERN ATHLETIC

LaVell Edwards will have to wait at least a week for his 200th victory as No. 22-ranked Brigham Young was upset by Colorado State, 28-21, at Provo, Utah. Greg Myers had two of Colorado State’s four interceptions against BYU’s John Walsh, who was also sacked four times. Myers turned his first interception into a first-quarter touchdown with a 30-yard return. Quarterback Anthoney Hill completed 17 of 31 passes for 280 yards and ran for a touchdown for the Rams, who are 3-0 for the first time since 1977. Walsh completed 27 of 57 passes for 358 yards for BYU (2-1). . . . Ryan Christopherson gained 163 yards in 35 carries and scored a touchdown to lead Wyoming (2-1) to a 17-7 nonconference victory over Tulsa (1-2) at Laramie, Wyo. The 236-pound Christopherson punished the Tulsa defense despite suffering a bruised right shoulder in the third play of the game. . . . Cody Ledbetter passed for 238 yards and two touchdowns as New Mexico State (1-2) scored a 23-22 nonconference victory over Texas El Paso (1-2) at El Paso.

MIDWEST

Kent ended major-college football’s longest losing streak at 17 games by beating Akron, 32-15, in a Mid-American Conference game at Kent, Ohio. Astron Whatley ran for 166 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Golden Flashes (1-1, 0-1) over the Zips (0-3, 0-2), who have been outscored 109-23 this season. Kent won for the first time since defeating Akron two years ago. . . . Chad Seitz kicked a 37-yard field goal into a gusting wind as time ran out to give Miami of Ohio a 17-17 tie with Cincinnati at Oxford, Ohio. Jon Bacon, Cincinnati’s kickoff specialist, hit a school-record 58-yarder with a 15 m.p.h. wind at his back to give the Bearcats (0-2-1) their only lead at 17-14 with 1:19 to play. Miami is now 0-2-1. . . . Ryan Henry threw four touchdown passes and Michael Parker ran for three scores as Bowling Green (2-1) recorded a 59-21 victory over Navy (0-3) at Bowling Green, Ohio.

SOUTH

Tommy Waters threw two touchdown passes and Southern Mississippi (2-1) stopped two second-half drives by Memphis (1-2) inside the 10 as the Golden Eagles beat the Tigers, 20-3, at Hattiesburg, Miss. Brock.

SOUTHWEST

With the memory of wasted chances against UCLA, Southern Methodist (1-2) scored with three seconds remaining to defeat New Mexico, 34-31, in a nonconference game at Dallas. On the winning play, SMU quarterback Ramon Flanigan stepped away from two defenders and hit Brian Berry with a seven-yard touchdown pass.

SOUTHLAND

Billy Parra tied a school record with 12 receptions for 179 yards and scored the winning touchdown on a 35-yard pass play from Ryan Huisenga with 1:55 remaining as Cal Lutheran (1-0) defeated Claremont, 37-34, in a Southern California Athletic Conference season opener at Claremont. . . . Josh Vitt passed for three touchdowns and the Colorado College defense allowed only 20 rushing yards in a 28-0 victory over Pomona-Pitzer (1-1) in a nonconference game at Colorado College. . . . Jerome Drumgold ran for two touchdowns and scored another on a 92-yard kickoff return to lead Occidental (1-0) to a 31-14 victory over Menlo College (0-3) in a nonconference game at Menlo.
